Key Details and Procedure-
Purpose: Measures dynamic balance and strength to predict injury risk, particularly for lower limb, by measuring how far a person can reach in three directions.
Lower Quarter Test: The individual stands on one leg, with hands on hips, and reaches with the opposite foot in three directions: Anterior (front), Posteromedial (back-inside), and Posterolateral (back-outside).
Upper Quarter Test: The individual assumes a push-up position and reaches with one hand in medial, superolateral, and superinferolateral directions.
Scoring: The maximum reach distance in each direction is recorded and normalized (divided) by the limb length to calculate a composite score. A difference of > 4 cm in the anterior reach between legs may indicate a higher injury risk.
Validity: The YBT is considered a reliable, valid, and practical method, used for assessing functional capacity, especially after injury or during athletic screening.
Criteria for Retest: A trial is invalid if the person loses balance, puts their hands down, or puts weight on the reaching foot.
